But is it safe to use? Learn the risks, how to talk to your kids, and where to get support.

What to Know About Cannabis Use
Recreational marijuana is now legal in many states, and dispensaries are popping up in local neighborhoods. But just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s harmless.
Here are a few important facts to keep in mind:
- About 3 in 10 people who use marijuana develop Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD)
- Roughly 1 in 3 users become addicted
- Risk is much higher for people who start young or use frequently
CUD happens when marijuana use starts to interfere with your life. That could mean:
- Using more than intended
- Trying but failing to quit
- Craving cannabis
- Using even when it’s causing problems at home, work, or in relationships
- Giving up activities in favor of using
- Needing more to get the same high
- Using while driving or in risky situations
People with CUD often experience problems with attention, memory, and learning, which can affect work performance and overall wellbeing.
Talking to Your Kids About Marijuana
Starting around age 10, it’s a good idea to talk with your kids about marijuana. These don’t need to be big, sit-down conversations — often the best talks happen in the car, at dinner, or while passing a dispensary. The most important thing? Keep the conversation open and ongoing.
Tips for meaningful conversations:
- Be honest. Kids respect the truth. If they ask about your experience, share what’s appropriate — and reinforce that marijuana use is for adults only, never while driving or to excess.
- Listen. Ask what they’ve seen, heard, or are curious about. Don’t shut them down if they have questions or opinions.
- Share facts. Talk about what marijuana is, why people use it, how it can be harmful to teens, and the risks of addiction.
- Offer support. If they’re experimenting or feeling pressure from friends, stay calm. Let them know your priority is their safety and they can always come to you.
