Once in a while, CareATC’s skilled staff gets to save a life – this time it was a mom and wife to one of Roper employees.

A Routine Visit That Changed Everything
Most people think of CareATC as a quick clinic for minor health issues, and it’s definitely that. But for Amber Ramirez, a spouse patient at CareATC Roper, one visit may have preserved her life.
At 22, Amber had a mitral valve replacement on her heart. She lived a full life—a marriage, two daughters, and a calling in her church—while always knowing she’d need another replacement someday.
When she began feeling short of breath in the summer of 2024, Amber made a cardiology appointment—but it was nearly a month away.
“So, I decided to book an appointment with CareATC to rule out other issues,” says Amber, wife of Richard Ramirez, Continuous Improvement Associate at GE Appliances Roper.
One Doctor’s Instincts Made the Difference
Amber saw Dr. Bucco and was immediately impressed.
“He was so thorough and attentive,” says Amber. “He made me feel safe and walked me through every step.”
During the exam, Dr. Bucco heard a heart murmur—and he didn’t hesitate. He contacted her cardiologist directly and insisted she be seen at once.
That decision likely saved her life.
The next day, Amber’s cardiologist discovered her mitral valve was failing, and her tricuspid valve was leaking. A 10-hour surgery followed. During it, she went into cardiac arrest. She was revived but remained sedated for three weeks.
The Road to Recovery
Amber spent months recovering—gaining the strength to walk again with physical therapy and leaning on the love of her husband and daughters.
“According to science, I shouldn’t be here,” Amber says. “I’m a walking miracle.”
She credits her survival to both her faith and Dr. Bucco’s quick action.
“I could have died while I was waiting to be seen,” she says. “Dr. Bucco really fought for me. I’ve never had a doctor take such a vested interest in my health.”
Early Detection Matters: Why PHAs Are Worth It
Amber’s story is a powerful reminder that early detection saves lives. That’s why we encourage you to take part in this year’s Personal Health Assessment (PHA) events.
PHAs are quick, easy, and confidential—and they give you a fast snapshot of your current health. One 15-minute visit includes:
