Too Close To Home

DaOnna Hicks advocates for early detection

According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. For some families, though, the odds feel much higher.

For DaOnna Hicks, headcount in AP1 at GE Appliances, breast cancer hit far too close to home.

“Not only did two of my cousins and my aunt pass from breast cancer, but my big sister was diagnosed as well,” says DaOnna.

By the time her sister sought help, the disease had already progressed to stage three.

“She hates doctors and hospitals, so she never goes unless it’s an emergency,” DaOnna explains. “Well, this time it was. If she had gone to the doctor as soon as she felt the small lump, it would have been caught early.”

Her sister endured chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery—treatments that saved her life but left lasting complications.

That experience changed how DaOnna viewed her own health. When she discovered an abnormal lump in her breast and underarm at age 38, she didn’t hesitate.

“Thankfully, it wasn’t cancer,” she says. “But now I get checked every year. The most important thing is your health, and no one can take care of that but you.”

DaOnna now encourages others to do the same.

“Even without a family history of breast cancer, a yearly exam can provide peace of mind and prevent a lot of suffering,” she says. “Breast cancer is a rough road. Getting your yearly screening is important and helps with early detection.”
