80% of Type 2 Diabetes is Preventable

Here’s what you need to know.

Diabetes does not discriminate, and it’s an epidemic that’s on the rise. Over 30 million Americans have the disease, and in Kentucky, almost 600,000 are afflicted, with 27,000 more diagnosed in the Bluegrass annually. Another one million-plus Kentuckians have prediabetes. The good news: There are steps you can take to prevent diabetes.

Here are four common risk factors for diabetes? Can you relate? Take this quick and confidential seven-question assessment to understand your risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Below are five recommendations for a healthy diet, which is key to preventing or managing diabetes:

  1. Choose water, coffee or tea instead of fruit juice, soda, or other sugar sweetened beverages. Limit alcohol intake to a maximum of two standard drinks per day for men, one per day for women.
  2. Eat at least three servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
  3. Choose lean cuts of white meat, poultry or seafood instead of red or processed meat.
  4. Eat whole-grain bread, rice or pasta instead of white bread, rice or pasta.
  5. Avoid saturated fats (butter, ghee, animal fat, coconut oil or palm oil), and instead choose unsaturated fats (olive oil, canola oil, corn oil, or sunflower oil).

As a reminder, the Parke Well Care Center (PWCC) can support you with testing and/or managing your diabetes.
