Good News: African Americans Are Living Longer

Keep the trend alive by focusing on four areas that remain a struggle.

In honor of Black History Month, we’re seeing a positive movement in health and wellbeing for African Americans. The death rate has declined an estimated 25 percent over the past 15+ years.

African Americans are living longer, however there is still work to be done around high blood pressure, diabetes, inactivity and obesity. Let the change start with you and know the facts:

  • African Americans are more likely to develop high blood pressure and often have more severe high blood pressure than other groups. You also are more likely to have the condition at an earlier age than others.
  • African Americans are 2 to 6 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes
  • In 2015, African Americans were 20 percent less likely to engage in active physical activity as Non-Hispanic whites. This inactivity is often connected with other health conditions such as heart disease, stroke and cancer.

Visit your primary care physician – or for Kentucky-based employees – schedule your annual physical at the Park Well Care Center (PWCC). Meet the PWCC’s new physician assistant, Kristin Fuller, and learn how you can make a change.
