There are ways you can help a new mother who is breastfeeding. Here are tips to get everyone through those early weeks with a new baby.
- Learn about breastfeeding so you know what to expect. If you do not have a lot of experience around breastfed babies and have not breastfed yourself, it will probably be very surprising how much and how frequently a breastfed baby eats.
- Don’t make unhelpful suggestions such as referring to your experience, offering formula, or sharing negative feelings about breastfeeding.
- Bring the new mom food, help with dishes or clean her house.
- Try not to overstay a visit. New moms and babies need their rest.
- If you’re close to the new mother, make sure she knows about the Women’s Network Affinity Groups Working Mother’s Sprouting Group and have these breastfeeding resources handy. Should an issue arise, the information will be ready to go.
