What you put into your body is important. Two new nutrition resources help our employees and their families feel their best.
Color-coded vending machines across Appliance Park inform employees just how healthy – or unhealthy – their snack is going to be. And that’s just the beginning of a deeper emphasis on nutrition at GEA. Employees as well as their family members can partner with Jamie McVay, a registered dietician available through The Y @ Work.
Health, happiness, and productivity are all tied together – with diet playing a key role. That’s why WellWithin is celebrating nutrition during March: National Nutrition Month. We’re focusing on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
A well-balanced and nutritious diet contributes to overall wellness; including lower rates of anxiety, boosts in energy, and lower risks for disease. The WHO reports that “adequate nutrition can raise your productivity levels by 20% on average.”*
Informed choices
In the vending machines, each item is labeled with a color to indicate its health value. Green (Go!) snacks are the lowest in fat, sugar, and calories. Yellow (Slow) snacks are higher and red (Control) snacks are the highest and least healthy. This system makes it easier for everyone to choose the snack with the best value for his or her overall health and energy. Plus, each of the green items is conveniently priced at just $1 or less.
“The colors make it easy to snack smart,” says Michele Clark, Health Services program professional, who helped bring the color-coded system to the business. “For me, it helps that I don’t have to look at the nutrition label and the healthiest snacks are nice on my wallet, too.”
Developing your nutrition strategy
Jamie McVay, the registered dietician, can provide individualized nutritional advice for emotional eating, metabolism and digestion as well as help manage chronic disease. She is ready to help employees achieve their personal nutrition goals.
All employees and their families can purchase her services through The Y @ Work, Appliance Park’s onsite fitness facility. You don’t have to be a member of The Y @ Work to take advantage of this opportunity. Initial consultation is only $30 for two 30-minute appointments, and additional sessions and packages can be purchased as needed.
