THE CONVERSATION OF A LIFETIME
Overcome your fear of talking about mental health this September during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—your bravery could change a life.
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness around a difficult topic. We can all benefit from conversations about mental health conditions and suicide. Just one conversation can change a life.
The goal is to spread hope and vital information to people affected by suicide. Intervention and support are key to suicide prevention. Anyone can have suicidal thoughts so it’s important to learn about the warning signs and resources so you can help a loved one, friend, or coworker navigate this important topic.
If someone you know is thinking about harming themselves, there are things you can do to help. Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can help you learn about suicide and how to approach someone struggling with these thoughts. Intervention is not easy but having the strong support of family and friends could change the mind of a person on the brink of suicide.
Recognize warning signs – There are usually warning signs before a person attempts suicide like:
- Mentioning the desire and an actual plan
- Losing interest in activities
- Feeling like a burden to others
- Changes in eating, sleeping or amount of drinking/drug use
- Giving away cherished belongings
How you can help
- If there is immediate danger, call 911
- Let them know you care, and that help is available
- Stay calm and make sure you are both safe
- It’s OK to ask: “Are you thinking about ending your life?”
- Send or call for help
