One moment shifted everything for Jeannette Bonet
“We get used to seeing ourselves every day in the mirror,” says Jeannette Bonet, cash applications representative at the Puerto Rico location of GE Appliances, a Haier company. “It’s easy to ignore weight gain as it slowly adds up.”
While on vacation in Colombia, Jeannette asked her husband to take a picture of her to send to friends.
“Suddenly, I saw myself in real life,” says Jeannette. “I had to delete the picture. I was so ashamed of how much weight I had gained.”
That was the moment everything shifted.
“I came home and scheduled an appointment with my doctor,” says Jeannette. “Thankfully, right now, there are so many resources to help people lose weight.”
Jeannette and her doctor reviewed the options and decided on her best route for weight loss. She started a low-carb diet and moderate exercise, but one major sacrifice stood in her way: soda.
“I had been drinking 3-4 soft drinks every day,” says Jeannette. “That is a very hard habit to break.
” But after a little bit of progress on the scale, Jeannette was all in. Now she drinks water instead, and it’s paying off. Today, Jeannette has lost over 50 lbs. and is down six dress sizes.
“I remember I would try to walk up the stairs at work,” says Jeannette. “By the top, I was so out of breath. Now I can walk them with no problem!”
Her blood pressure is down. Her sleep apnea has improved, and her thyroid has leveled out.
“I started this journey for my appearance,” says Jeannette. “But I’m finishing it for my health.”
She knows that just because her kids are grown doesn’t mean they don’t need her.
“I want to be here for them and my husband,” says Jeannette. “If I don’t have my health, what do I have?”
Now, seeing before and after pictures, Jeannette is proud of herself.
“Once you hit a breaking point, committing is easier,” says Jeannette. “That vacation, that picture was my breaking point. I’ve worked so hard to get here.”
By the looks of it, Jeannette has a lot more vacations (and pictures!) to enjoy in her future.
