How Fitness and Friendship has Katherine Larimore Thriving

“There’s nothing quite like living with a secret,” says Katherine Larimore, immigration specialist at GE Appliances, a Haier company.
At the beginning of 2023, Katherine was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
“I struggled alone for a long time,” says Katherine. “I didn’t want anyone to know.”
But everything changed when Katherine’s co-worker, Michele Terry, senior manager of HR Operations, invited Katherine to join her for a workout at The Y @ Work on-site at Appliance Park. Michele knew how life changing working out at the Y can be.
The joy of movement
“It didn’t take long for us to become the people who are running to the gym through the freezing cold in shorts,” says Katherine. “It’s at the point where it’s what I look forward to in my day! I hate to say it, but the professionals are right; exercise improves your mental health.”
From lifting weights to barre classes, Katherine and Michele work out five days a week. Katherine has even fallen in love with spin class (despite her initial disdain).
“Exercise helps me regulate,” says Katherine. “It’s grounding. The benefits have been endless.”
Finding family in fitness
The group exercise community has nourished Katherine as well.
“We have become a little family,” says Katherine. “Having Michele there to go with me makes all the difference.”
Katherine found it to be a lifeline she didn’t know she needed.
“You can’t always tell from the outside, but we’re in this season where everyone is battling something,” says Katherine. “Not everything is fixable, but you can learn how to manage struggles.”
Becoming an advocate for connection
Katherine is no longer hiding. In fact, she’s become an advocate for those who are struggling silently.
“Trust me, it feels good to be known,” says Katherine. “You don’t have to power through it. You can find a community and work through it. Feeling strong physically helps me feel strong emotionally and mentally. And, thankfully, I feel stronger than ever.”
Turns out we are better together.
