The Messy Journey to Becoming Her Best Self

The results were worth the work

There’s something formative about watching our parents age. It’s almost a foreshadowing or warning sign of what is to come. Nirisha Turaga, principal DT program manager at GE Appliances – India, learned this firsthand.

“Caring for my [aging] family made me realize their ailments were because of an inactive lifestyle,” says Nirisha.

And she wanted something different for herself.

While facing the potential loss of a parent, witnessing her grandfather’s dementia diagnosis, and caring for aging grandparents, reality hit Nirisha hard.

“I lacked the strength and stamina to support my family effectively,” says Nirisha. “In April 2019, I made a promise to myself to prioritize my physical wellbeing.”

Her fitness journey began with group classes, but consistency was challenging.

“Everything changed when I discovered boxing,” says Nirisha. “It genuinely sparked joy. My confidence grew, and I rediscovered my love for badminton.”

The pandemic threatened to derail her progress, but inspiration came from unexpected places.

“A creator in her 70s, Train with Joan, showed me creative ways to work out at home,” says Nirisha. “Motivated, I transformed my living room and terrace into my personal gym, using YouTube videos and a yoga mat.”

The results were transformative.

“In 2020, I lost 23 pounds and became the strongest version of myself,” says Nirisha.

Conquering nutrition was her next target.

“I learned about protein deficiencies in the typical Indian vegetarian diet and began experimenting with whole foods and protein intake,” says Nirisha. “I rely on a couple of protein options like paneer, soy chunks, and whey protein. I start with a simple, high-protein breakfast recipe called Shakshuka which is made from eggs.”

Soon she was consciously tracking macros and consuming at least 90 grams of protein daily. Equipped for more power, in January 2022, she began weightlifting.

“Today, I train five days a week,” says Nirisha. “My strength stats are impressive: 150-lbs. bench press, 220-lbs. squat, and 242-lbs. deadlift.”

This journey has taught her that personal transformation is messy and challenging but incredibly rewarding.

“Before I got healthy, I lacked energy and would tire easily,” says Nirisha. “I had joint pains and weakness, and I wasn’t able to help my grandparents physically.”

After making the necessary changes and exercising, Nirisha is stronger than ever.

“I no longer have pain or issues with movement,” says Nirisha. “Assisting with moving a grandparent, running around for meds or appointments, and just getting through the day of chores, work, and exercise feels doable. I have way more energy for the unpredictability of life.”
