Nine simple ways to ease your family into a smoother, less stressful school year + three resources to help

It’s hard to believe summer is almost over and a new school year is here. Whether you’re sending your baby to preschool, helping your teen transition to middle or high school, or dropping your college student off on campus, this season brings a lot of change.
That’s why WellWithin is offering nine easy tips to help you ease back into a healthy school-year rhythm.
1. Fuel Up with Smart Meals
Each week, our CareATC Registered Dietitian, Brittany Woodbury, will be posting videos on healthy meals for back to school. Be on the lookout!
2. Prevent School Supply Stress
Lost supplies and uniforms can wreck a budget fast. Labels are a low-cost way to help your child hold on to their belongings—from books and lunchboxes to water bottles and backpacks.
And if back-to-school spending is stressing you out, don’t forget: you’ve got access to free budgeting advice through your Fidelity benefit.
3. Get Organized Early
• Have a plan for school supplies and uniforms
• Think through drop-off/pick-up routines now
• Review the school calendar and line up emergency childcare ahead of time
4. Set Goals—and Expectations
Encourage your kids to set academic and personal goals. Talk about behavior expectations at home and at school so they know what’s expected.
Need support? You get five free sessions with the Employee Assistance Program—virtual or onsite at most locations.
5. Reset Your Sleep Schedule
A week or two before school starts, gradually shift your child’s bedtime and wake-up time. Recommended sleep amounts by age:
• Ages 3–5: 10–13 hours
• Ages 6–13: 9–11 hours
• Ages 14–17: 8–10 hours
6. Create Easy Mornings
Give your kids a calm start by waking up 20 minutes before them. Prep outfits and breakfast the night before to avoid stress. A “no electronics” rule before bed and first thing in the morning helps everyone stick to a routine.
7. Talk Safety and Transportation
Go over how your child will get to and from school. Review safety rules for walking, biking, or riding the bus. Make sure they know your contact info and what to do in an emergency.
8. Be Present and Supportive
Before school starts, reassure them of their strengths and speak words of encouragement. Talking through worries together can ease anxiety.
Encourage them to focus on the positives—new friends, fun learning, and activities they enjoy.
9. Keep the Support Going
Once school begins, ask about their day and listen for signs of stress, like clinginess or hesitation. Normalize their feelings and let them know they’re not alone.
