Cervical cancer was once a leading cause of cancer death for women in the U.S. While screening and prevention have greatly reduced its impact, 14,000 women were projected to receive cervical cancer diagnosis in 2023 and approximately 4,300 will die from the disease each year, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Screening and prevention are key. Since almost all cases of the disease are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, vaccines could prevent most cases. Plus, regular Pap tests can catch – and lead to the treatment of – the disease at the precancerous stage.
