What’s the first thing you think of when you hear “self-care” or “self-improvement”?
Meditation?
Yoga?
Those are great, but self-care can mean so much more. It’s about giving yourself a chance to thrive; to strive to be the best version of yourself every day. September is Self-Improvement month – the best time to try something new that will make you a more skilled and capable person.
Here are six ideas to help you get started:
1. Learn a new skill
Try a new hobby or sport you’ve never tried before! Maybe it’s writing in journal, knitting, or playing volleyball in the park. It doesn’t matter what it is. Just do something different from your usual routine to shake up your life and make space for self-care this month.
2. Declutter your space
Look at your things to see if there are items that haven’t been used in the last six months or more. If the item is broken, fix it or replace it with something new. If it’s still good, donate it to charity or give it to someone who could use it. Clearing out your space will open your mind to reaching for new goals.
3. Work on your empathy skills
By developing your ability to better understand others’ feelings, you can improve your relationships with family, friends, and coworkers. You’ll feel more confident and outgoing when you think about someone else’s perspective. They will feel more comfortable around you, and you can prevent misunderstandings before they happen.
4. Create a sleep routine
Healthy sleep helps you feel happier, more productive, and more alert during the day. Your brain can’t function properly without enough sleep. If you’re serious about self-improvement, a regular sleep schedule should be at the top of your to-do list. Start by trying to go to bed 30 minutes to one hour earlier each night until you reach that golden seven-nine hours of sleep.
5. Plan a daily workout routine
Getting regular exercise is a great way to improve your physical and mental health. You can’t expect to get fit if you don’t put in the work. To reach your goals, schedule time for exercise and stick to it. It’s tempting to skip a workout when life gets busy or stressful, but you will feel so much better when you keep your workout commitment to yourself. Remember – The Y @ Work in Appliance Park is now only $2.50 per week ($10 per month)!
6. Volunteer to help people in need
Volunteering is a great way to help others while improving yourself. Volunteering can help you feel more fulfilled and connected to your community, even if you volunteer alone. Doing random acts of kindness will not only makes someone’s day but will also increase your happiness. Not sure where to start? Log into Benevity and find GEA-sponsored volunteer projects.
TAKE THE FIRST ACTION STEP NOW
These are just some of the things you can do to improve yourself this month. You don’t have to do all of them at once. Instead, pick one or two to try during September and focus on them. You’ll find things you enjoy that motivate you to keep improving.
