Showing Appreciation Motivates Others, Builds Your Self-Esteem

Make it a point to say “thank you” to others – and yourself!

Like any relationship, it’s easy to take others for granted. Work is no exception. Now is always a perfect time to remind your teammates how valuable they are.

But are you getting appreciation in return? Recognition is a basic human need. So, while it’s important to show appreciation to others – you can also ask for it when you’re not feeling it.

What to do when you’re feeling unappreciated

  1. Ask for what you need: If you’re not sure if your work is valued, ask for feedback. It’s OK to ask your leader if what you’re doing is meeting their expectations and making a difference.
  2. Celebrate yourself: You don’t have to wait for someone else to tell you you’re doing a good job. When you complete a big project or keep your cool in a stressful situation, take time to reflect on a job well done.
  3. Show appreciation to others: When you recognize a teammate’s efforts, you’ll be surprised by the chain reaction that follows. When you intentionally notice the good things others are doing, you develop a stronger sense of your own value. Gratitude inspires stronger relationships and leads to greater self-esteem.

Managers and leaders: Effective ways to show employees appreciation

  1. Make work more meaningful: When you’re creating an assignment, acknowledge an employee’s skills and explain why they’re the right person for the job. This reminds employees you know their strengths and you see how much they are contributing.
  2. Send a thank you note: A personal note whether it’s handwritten, or an ecard through Recognize YOU, is a tangible expression of your appreciation.
  3. Offer a break from the daily routine: Encouraging team members to go out for lunch, head to the gym, take a break and walk outdoors, come in a little late, or leave early shows you realize how hard they are working.
  4. Listen to employees’ concerns: When you make time to ask an employee what’s on their mind and really listen to their answers, you show you care and appreciate them.
